The objective of the research was to determine the risk factors that influence the increase of gastrointestinal infections in children under five years of age in the Sol Brisas Sector of the Babahoyo Canton in the Province of Los Ríos in the period May-September 2019. The study has a qualitative-quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional approach; The methods applied were inductive-deductive and analytical, the techniques of observation and survey were applied. The study population consisted of 57 children under five years old, the questionnaire was used to obtain information from the mothers or representatives of the children and an observation sheet to the nursing staff of the Enrique Ponce Luque Health Center. The results obtained show that: the consumption of unhealthy water, poor hygiene of food, the absence of hand washing before eating and after using the bathroom, the inadequate elimination of human excreta, are the main risk factors, which occurs due to ignorance of mothers or representatives; In addition, the limited actions by the nursing staff of the Enrique Ponce Luque Health Center, such as home visits, educational talks, prevention and health promotion, increase gastrointestinal infections.
