| Summary: | Drug use during pregnancy is a highly relevant public health problem, given its adverse impact both on the mother and on fetal and neonatal development. Among the most frequent perinatal complications related to drug use during pregnancy are premature delivery, neonatal abstinence syndrome, congenital malformations and fetal death. The aim of this study is to identify perinatal complications in pregnant drug users. A quantitative method was used, and the study population consisted of 108 pregnant women who were selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were obtained by reviewing clinical histories and hospital records. Results: 58% of the pregnant women presented prematurity, which was frequently associated with the use of substances such as heroin and marijuana, since they induce premature uterine contractions and placental alterations. In addition, 79% of the neonates were born with low birth weight, decreasing the nutritional and oxygen supply to the baby. Conclusion: the results suggest that adequate access to prenatal care is a key factor in reducing the risks associated with drug use. Pregnant women who receive adequate monitoring and treatment are less likely to experience serious complications. |
