Resumo:The present research work was carried out on "Pruning practices in the cultivation of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). The objectives were: Identify and characterize the best pruning practices in watermelon cultivation, and define the best pruning practice(s) in watermelon cultivation. The research was carried out using the bibliographic research methodology, raising all kinds of technical-technological information taken from publications, books, journals, articles, and websites specialized in this subject. The research techniques used were: the inductive-deductive reading, to make a general diagnosis on the possible best pruning practices in the cultivation of watermelon. The information collected in the research was analyzed, systematized, and summarized to identify the problem, its causes and results in relation to the possible best pruning practices in watermelon cultivation, but always without losing sight of the proposed study objectives. This study detected that watermelon is one of the main tropical fruits that is in great demand in Ecuador; It is also one of the main crops that are sown and that generate good economic income to the families that produce the fruit, but we find the reality that producers, mainly small and medium-sized, do not know this practice or do not know how to carry it out, consequently having low harvest and quality of fruits. For these reasons the research focuses on knowing the different types of pruning, training, phytosanitary, and production, how to perform them and post-pruning treatment so as not to affect the crop and make it more productive. We find that, mainly the pruning of formation, sanitary, and production, contribute to raise the volume of the harvests and the quality of the fruits. We conclude about how important it is to carry out pruning in the cultivation of watermelon, and that, therefore, this crop must be attended to like any other crop, making good tillage of the soil, sowing good varieties or hybrids, applying an adequate planting density, eliminating weeds, fertilizing, doing pest and disease controls, providing irrigation and, for our case, carrying out the necessary pruning to achieve the highest fruit production per unit area
