Description
Summary:Introduction: Diabetes is a chronic degenerative disease that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not competently use the insulin it produces. In this sense, the present investigation focuses on studying and analyzing all the possible biopsychosocial factors that can affect the health behaviors carried out by the patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and the follow-up of medical prescriptions. General objective: To establish the relationship between biopsychosocial factors and adherence to pharmacological treatment in elderly patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus treated at the IESS Hospital in Babahoyo in the period from October 2018 to April 2019. Methodology: This is a historical-logical, descriptive and transversal research, the research method is inductive-deductive, the modality will be qualitative-quantitative. Results: The present investigation consisted of a sample of 84 older adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. There was a slightly higher percentage of men (60.70%) than women (39.30%). Conclusions: With regard to the therapeutic adherence prescribed by the physician, it was found that 69 patients (82.14%) reported not systematically fulfilling the usual pharmacological treatment for various reasons. According to the level of acceptance that these patients have regarding the disease they suffer, it was shown that a large percentage (29.08%) of these still do not fully accept suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus.
