Si el producto no ha llegado a término se denomina ruptura prematura de membranas pre-término (PPROM), también se puede producir una PROM prolongada, se identifica cuando se exceden las veinticuatro horas o más desde el inicio del trabajo de parto. Esta ruptura prematura de membrana es un de las complicaciones que usualmente se presenta en la práctica obstétrica, sin embargo, esta puede tener un aumento en su incidencia dentro de la tasa de morbilidad y mortalidad materna-feto, relacionada por las infecciones puerperales.
