description The purpose of this case study is to apply the nursing process in an adult with tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a contagious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it can affect the lungs, kidneys, spine and brain, among others. Public health programs have helped reduce its incidence in many countries, it remains a major public health problem in some regions, especially in areas with weak health systems and high poverty rates. ((Pan American Health Organization, 2022). In 2022, 1.3 million individuals will lose their lives due to tuberculosis, including 167,000 people who also carry HIV. Tuberculosis is positioned as the second infectious disease with the highest mortality rate, surpassing HIV and AIDS. In that same year, it is estimated that 10.6 million people were affected by tuberculosis worldwide, distributed among 5.8 million men, 3.5 million women and 1.3 million children. Despite its presence in all nations and age ranges, tuberculosis is a disease that can be treated and prevented (Organización Mundial de salud, 2023). In Ecuador there has been a progressive increase in molecular tests - PCR carried out, with 10,948 in 2019, later in 2020 and despite the effect caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 11,200 tests were carried out. For the year 2021, there is an increase of 42.4% (19,448 tests carried out), and of 31.6% in the year 2022 (28,456). This information is also linked to the use of molecular tests as the first diagnostic test, instead of copy bacilli, which has been carried out in the country since 2021 with 400 tests reported in priority groups, increasing in 2022 to 2,955, and with the projection for the year 2025 that it will be used as the first diagnostic test in the entire general population.
