| Summary: | Introduction: Since the beginning of the twentieth century there has been interest in knowing what the role of nutrition in elderly people is. Inadequate food intake is a major risk factor causing morbidity and mortality in elderly people. General objective: To determine the relationship between the food intake and the nutritional status of the elderly of the Gerontology Center of Good Living from Babahoyo canton, Los Ríos province, May - October 2018. Methodology: By practicing anthropometric measurements (weight, height, Body Mass Index, brachial, calf and waist circumference) and the food intake survey (MNA Questionnaire: Mini Nutritional Assessment), It was identified the alterations of the nutritional status and the relation with food consumption in the elderly who come and stay in this stage. Results: After an overall evaluation of the MNA questionnaire, it shows that in the elderly: 60% (48 of 80) are at risk of malnutrition, 22% (18 of 80) are in a normal nutritional state, and 14% (14 of 80) presents malnutrition. Conclusions: The frequency of food intake in this group was identified, from here is obtained the relation with nutritional status. This influences in an important way because even though the group has a normal nutritional status, they are at risk of malnutrition due to the lower limit of the classification for this age group |
