Occasionally, the skin and the white part of the eyes may have a yellowish color (jaundice). In addition, there are risks to the developing baby, such as premature delivery and stillbirth. In about 15% of cases the disease is caused by alterations (mutations) in the ABCB11 or ABCB4 genes. Mutations in the ABCB11 and ABCB4 genes are inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. However, in most cases (about 75%) the cause is unknown. Symptoms only occur in pregnancy and problems occur after delivery, but may return during subsequent pregnancies. |

Es una condición que afecta la liberación de la bilis (un jugo digestivo) a partir de las células del hígado. La bilirrubina se acumula afectando la función del hígado. Por lo general, los síntomas comienzan en el tercer trimestre del embarazo y pueden incluir prurito. De vez en cuando, la piel y la parte blanca de los ojos pueden tener un color amarillento (ictericia). Además, hay riesgos para el bebé en desarrollo, tales como parto prematuro y muerte fetal. En más o menos 15% de los casos la enfermedad es causada por alteraciones (mutaciones) en los genes ABCB11 o ABCB4.
