| Resumo: | Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) poses a critical obstetric challenge with adverse consequences for both mothers and fetuses. This research aims to comprehensively analyze PROM prevention strategies, causal factors, and incidence in Latin America, with a particular focus on the Ecuadorian situation. We begin by contextualizing the importance of PROM prevention, highlighting its link to complications such as preterm birth, chorioamnionitis, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Various preventive interventions are examined, ranging from rigorous prenatal care to proper management of risk factors such as vaginal infection, as well as promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and self-care education during pregnancy. Next, potential causal factors of PROM are explored, including biological aspects such as inflammation and weakening of the amniotic membranes, as well as socioenvironmental determinants such as inequity in access to quality medical care, unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, and disparities in education and female empowerment. The existing evidence on the relationship between these factors and the incidence of PROM in Latin America is analyzed, focusing on the Ecuadorian reality through epidemiological data and relevant local studies. To address these aspects, an integrative methodology is employed, combining systematic review of medical literature, analysis of demographic data, and consultations with obstetric health professionals in Ecuador, with the purpose of obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the situation. It is concluded that effective management of PROM in Latin America, and specifically in Ecuador, requires a multidisciplinary approach encompassing clinical interventions and public health policies aimed at improving access to quality prenatal care, as well as mitigating social determinants of health and promoting gender equity. |
