Description
Summary:The objective of this study was to determine the presence of demodectic mange in dogs from the city of Vinces, Los Ríos Province, Ecuador. A non-probabilistic sampling of 100 dogs with symptoms of alopecia and skin lesions was performed, and deep skin scrapings were carried out for the diagnosis of the disease. The results showed a prevalence of demodectic mange of 16% in the analyzed sample, with all positive cases caused by the mite Demódex canis. No cases attributable to Demódex injai were found. The most represented breed was the mixed-breed (91%), followed by French, Chihuahua, Pitbull, Labrador, and Shar-Pei. The majority of positive cases corresponded to mixed-breed dogs. Regarding sex, the sample was mainly composed of males (60%), and positive cases were distributed between males and females. Concerning age, most dogs were between 1 and 5 years old (82%), and positive cases were present in both age groups. Statistical analysis using the chi-square test found no significant association between the variables of breed, sex, age, and the diagnosis of demodectic mange. This suggests that, in the studied sample, these variables do not seem to be determining factors for the presence of the disease. As part of the study, socialization activities were carried out targeting the community of Vinces, including educational talks and distribution of informative material about canine demodicosis, its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment
