| Riassunto: | Chagas disease, a dangerous and common parasitic infection in Latin America, is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted through blood-sucking bugs of the Triatominae subfamily, known as vinchucas, bed bugs, or chinchorros. This disease poses a serious public health problem in the 21 endemic countries, claiming the lives of millions of people. The present study focuses on canine Chagas disease and its impact on public health, examining clinical symptoms, main risk factors, and its influence in endemic rural areas of Ecuador. This research is conducted through a bibliographic documentary approach using the inductive-deductive method. Information is obtained from scientific articles, indexed journals, and other bibliographic sources. Search platforms such as Google Scholar and academic databases are employed to access relevant information. The study reveals that 3.1% of the evaluated dogs were infected with T. cruzi, with infection being more common in dogs older than one year and in areas with a high density of infected human population. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between infection and the presence of disease vectors in households. These findings indicate that T. cruzi infection in dogs represents a significant public health issue in the province of Manabí. It is crucial to highlight that with timely treatment, dogs can recover from the disease and lead a full and healthy life. Therefore, it is essential to implement detection and control strategies for canine Chagas disease, especially in endemic areas, in order to reduce its impact on public health and improve the quality of life for affected animals and communities. |
