Root and fruit rot caused by the fungus Phytophthora sp can be classified as another limiting disease for papaya cultivation, due to the high susceptibility of the varieties and to the soil moisture conditions that prevail in the areas of production during the winter season due to high rainfall. The information obtained was carried out through the technique of analysis, synthesis and summary, in order for the reader to know about the main diseases that occur in the cultivation of papaya (Carica papaya) in Ecuador. Due to the above, it was determined that the most important diseases in papaya cultivation are: ringspot (PRV-p), anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes) and root rot (Phytophthora sp). Continuous monitoring within the papaya crop allows verifying if there is any phytosanitary problem. Fungicide application systems allow control of papaya crop diseases. Proper agronomic management of the crop is important to avoid the presence of endemic diseases. |

Los problemas comienzan desde vivero, continúan en el campo y todavía en el almacenamiento desde la cosecha y empaque. Desde el punto de vista fitosanitario una de las mayores limitantes detectados para la producción del cultivo de papaya es la presencia del virus de la mancha anular (PRV-p). Esta enfermedad está distribuida en todas las zonas productoras de papaya del Ecuador, presentando una incidencia cercana al 100% y provocando altas pérdidas económicas al productor superior al 80%. Las pudriciones de la raíces y frutos causadas por el hongo Phytophthora sp, se puede catalogar como otra enfermedad limitante para el cultivo de la papaya, debido a la alta susceptibilidad que presentan las variedades y a las condiciones de humedad del suelo que prevalecen en las zonas de producción durante la época invernal debido a las altas precipitaciones. La información obtenida fue efectuada mediante la técnica de análisis, síntesis y resumen, con la finalidad de que el lector conozca sobre las principales enfermedades que se presentan en el cultivo de papaya (Carica papaya), en el Ecuador. Por lo anteriormente detallado se determinó que las enfermedades más importantes en el cultivo de papaya son: mancha anular (PRV-p), antracnosis (Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes) y pudrición de raíces (Phytophthora sp). El monitoreo continuo dentro del cultivo de papaya permite verificar si se existe algún problema fitosanitario.
