La diabetes es la causa del desarrollo de la retinopatía, la retinopatía diabética es la 3ra causa de ceguera en el mundo. Afectando a personas pertenecientes a la PEA (población económicamente activa), esto genera perdidas grandes a nivel económico. En tal virtud es imprescindible detectarla de manera temprana con el fin de tomar las acciones necesarias para paliar sus efectos. La retinopatía diabética es irreversible y no afecta a la visión hasta estar en estado avanzado.
