Description
Summary:Pitahaya Hylocereus megalanthus recorded record figures in Ecuador, reaching a total of USD 383 million by August 2024, which represents an increase of 108% compared to previous periods. This exotic fruit, notable for its superlative nutritional value, increases the supply of non-traditional crops. During this analysis, a bibliographic, non-experimental method was used, focusing on recent documents, research articles and other specialized literature. This text aims to characterize the internationalization of Ecuadorian pitahaya, identifying commercial and health markets and quantifying the economic impacts. The evidence from the study shows that the main markets are the United States, Canada, countries of the European Union and China, although competition with countries such as Vietnam and Mexico is fierce. For exporters, these countries pose significant challenges, since a large percentage are underdeveloped small and medium-sized producers. Economically, the impacts have been an increase in local entrepreneurship, greater economic activity in the area and the boost effect on the supply of job opportunities. It is also recommended that more state support be provided for technology enablement and financing, the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and the development of innovative strategies.
