Shrnutí:The present work was developed with the purpose of strengthening the knowledge of producers, veterinarians and zootechnicians. In the past, Ecuador was affected by the existence of different toxic plants, resulting in a great economic loss for the people dedicated to this area. This problem was unknown to veterinarians and owners at the time; Toxic or poisonous plants are so called because they contain compounds that cause an alteration of the health and vitality of ruminants. That is why the importance of this work, where its active ingredients, clinical signs, preventive measures are detailed, which aims to classify the toxic plants that affect ruminants by active ingredient, among these we have: Glycosides, alkaloids, phytotoxins, minerals : nitrates and nitrites, oxalates, photosensitivity and Thiamine deficiency. In the present work it was concluded that it is of vital importance to classify and show the toxic plants by active principles to improve the recognition and the degree of toxicity; In addition, that the ingestion of toxic plants is of veterinary and human health interest, the presence of the Thiaminase toxin has been evidenced in milk and meat of animals intoxicated with Pteridium Aquilinum. To conclude, it is essential to have knowledge about toxic plants, because the ingestion of them generates economic losses at the productive level.
