Opis
Sažetak:The study of the selection index of the sustainable genetic improvement program for dairy cattle in the Guaytacama parish during the 2023 period reveals significant findings related to milk production, operational efficiency, and product quality. The general objective was to analyze the selection index used in the sustainable genetic improvement program for dairy cattle in the parish, identifying the evaluated characteristics and the weights assigned to each of them. The research project was conducted in the Guaytacama parish, located in the Cotopaxi province, over a period of 3 months from october to december. Descriptive observational research was employed, obtaining characteristics naturally acquired by the population, where data and information were collected regarding characteristics, properties, aspects, and dimensions of individuals, using records of milk production and cattle performance. This technique provided historical data and allowed for the analysis of production trends over time. Through the studied data, animals fulfilling the three specified characteristics (weight gain, milk liters, and density) were selected, aiming at the genetic diffusion of these animals distinguished by their environment and management. Likewise, the obtained data were added to the BLUP to estimate this value, obtaining a phenotype mean and adding it to the estimated breeding value. Ultimately, information from 13 producers was obtained, serving individuals actively involved in data usage and management, facilitating data collection. A sample of 28 cows generating milk production in the sector was selected for the study. Key characteristics evaluated in the selection index were identified, along with significant variability in production costs per liter among different producers. Additionally, the Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) was analyzed as a tool to assess the milk production potential of animals, revealing cattle with high potential for weight gain and others with inferior performance. However, a discrepancy was observed between the obtained milk density values and the standards established by the INEN, raising concerns about product quality.
