Resumo:Giardiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Giardia lamblia, which has a worldwide distribution and is commonly found in canines. This parasite is one of the causes of gastrointestinal symptoms and represents a public health concern due to its high prevalence and disease burden. Therefore, this study focused on determining the prevalence of Giardia spp. in canines from the Eloy Alfaro parish of Latacunga canton, Cotopaxi province, where 68 fecal samples were collected and processed using the Indirect Method Kit for Giardia. The kit results were grouped by age from 1 to 3 years, 4 to 6 years, and over 7 years, with the objective of examining the impact of factors such as age, deworming, feeding, and type of housing. The results revealed a prevalence of 14.71% of Giardia spp. in the canine population of the Eloy Alfaro parish. Specifically, a higher proportion of positive cases was observed in canines aged 4 to 6 years, with a prevalence of 7.36%, followed by the group aged 1 to 3 years, with 5.88%, while dogs older than 7 years represented 1.47% of positive cases. In addition, there was a slight preponderance of positive cases in females compared to males. In relation to deworming, the incidence of Giardia lamblia was found to be higher in non-dewormed dogs compared to those that had received some treatment.
