| Summary: | Cotopaxi is one of the four provinces with the most livestock production in Ecuador, it has approximately 256 thousand heads of cattle, most of which are small and medium-sized producers. However, the lack of phenotypic and genotypic information about their animals makes it difficult to produce and estimate the genetic value of the animals. With the aim of addressing this problem, a research was carried out in Pujilí-La Matriz parish Cotopaxi province, in the communes: San Isidro and Cochaloma through data analysis, production costs, daily weight gain, milk production and density, the adversities of the producers' daily lives were determined by maximizing production with the objectives of genetic improvement. The results showed that the average milk production price is $0.20 per liter with an average monthly profit of $162.82. Furthermore, it was observed that the best daily weight gain is 120.02 g/day in production cows, which would require 6 generations to reach the estimated value of 700 g/day. Regarding milk production, the parish average was 1240.75 kg/day/lactation, with 6 generations being necessary to reach the estimated value of 5000 kg/day/lactation. In terms of milk density, the average was 0.86 g/ml,and two generations would be required to reach the estimated value of 1,032 g/ml. As a result of the analysis, three cows were selected, Lladira, Toxica and Quiteña, which have the necessary parameters considering the selection values obtained through the statistical method of the Best Linear Unbiased Predictor (BLUP). This method is used to estimate the values and genetic gains of traits of interest. In summary, this research provides valuable information for dairy producers in Pujilí-La Matriz Parish, in order to improve animal selection and achieve better results in terms of milk production. |
