Gaia:This research study determined the differences between the perception of readers and the self-definition of the directors of a public media and an alternative media, through the case study in the newspapers “El Telégrafo” and “El Quincenario Opción”, located in Quito-Ecuador during the period October 2018 - February 2019. In 2013, the Organic Law of Communication (Ley Orgánica de Comunicación, LOC) came into force, which established the media classification such as: public, private and communal. Before the first division, studies revealed the confusion of the citizenry, as well as the conflicts that some Medias faced to self-define. In this regard, the primary interest of this study was to establish the aforementioned differences and know the real situation of this media, analyzing them comparatively. One of the objectives was to know the public perception of public and alternative concept. On the other hand, they examined the institutional self-definition of “El Telégrafo” and “Opción” by their representatives, in order to compare testimonies between both entities, and work through focused on media groups and in-depth interviews. Among the results obtained, it is highlighted that the series of changes in the political direction of the State has led to confusion, greater uncertainty and even disagreements among the readers of the newspaper “El Telégrafo”.
