| Резюме: | In the center area of Ecuador, specifically in the province of Tungurahua, one of the most important productive sectors is the leather industry; approximately 90 % of the total nationwide production is concentrated in this province. This work builds on a long-standing issue in the tanning industry to address the impacts associated with discharging hazardous effluents from the productive process, the main problem in this industry. The leather industry is considered to have a high environmental impact, due mainly to improper handling of effluents, uncontrolled consumption of water resources and chemicals, and inadequate treatment of wastewater. Therefore, the initial focus of this work was limited to analyse the management of effluents and assess the environmental impact caused by the processes. The tanning process was outlined and the process flow diagram was represented in order to evaluate the management of effluents, and at the same time identify the environmental factors in every stage of the process. Regarding the evaluation of the environmental impact, a baseline was depicted by first considering the impact related to the management of effluents followed by the impact related to the normal functioning of the factoy and its processes by using the environmental impact matrix by Vicente Conesa. At the end, a proposal covering the “Design of a wastewater treatment plant” in order to avoid excessive chromium contamination is also presented. |
