Shrnutí:The present investigation was developed with the objective to estimate the total merit index of the sustainable genetic improvement program for dairy cattle in the parish Chantilín canton Saquisilí, for complying this purpose it was necessary to collect information about the monthly expenses of 27 animals owners in feeding, health, and transportation. We also collected data about the weight of 143 animals and the production and density of milk in 40 animals. In order to estimate the breeding value based on the improvement objectives of daily weight gain, milk production at 305 days, and milk density as well as their responses to selection using the BLUP statistical model, all of this information was processed to obtain the production costs and the monthly benefits. According to the results, the cost of production was $0.25 per liter of milk, while the farmers' monthly benefits averaged $51.26, so milk production at 305 days was established as a selection index. Furthermore, it was obtained a calf with a daily weight gain of 174.68 grams/day, and two cows with 763.52 and 707.34 liters for milk production at 305 days, and with 1.069 and 1.064 kilograms/liter for milk density. These same cows showed a high response to selection for the index that was established with values of 1471.52 liters and 1415.35 liters for milk production at 305 days. Based on the results, the cows Nena and Sabina comply with the selection index of milk production at 305 days, so their genetics can be disseminated to improve milk production in this sector and help small farmers to improve their production systems and achieve higher economic benefits, which will allow them have a better quality of life.
