La metodología que se utilizó fue la investigación cualitativa, de campo, descriptiva, bibliográfica puesto que con ellas se pudo alcanzar los objetivos propuestos como caracterizar los tipos de residuos, evaluar el sistema actual del cantón y diseñar un modelo de gestión integral de manejo de residuos sólidos.
