| Περίληψη: | Drying seeds in Cotopaxi province is mainly done by air, taking advantage of solar energy. This drying method has several disadvantages: it depends extremely on the climatic conditions, which causes a decrease in the viability and quality of the seeds since they are exposed to environmental pollution, pests, diseases and their exposure with soil and dust. In addition, it involves a long sectioning time, large spaces are required and non-uniform drying of the products can occur. Therefore, the main objective of this research project is to evaluate drying time, energy efficiency and seed quality in drying using microwave technology, and compared to conventional drying in the electric oven. To fulfill this objective, an electric furnace was designed and built in which the drying process of corn seeds was evaluated at three different drying temperatures: 35, 55 and 75°C. Secondly, the seeds drying process was evaluated in a microwave oven under the same conditions (seed mass to be dried, initial seed moisture and drying temperature) as those used in the electric oven. The results obtained from the comparison of two drying technologies shows that microwave technology, compared to the conventional technology, decreases drying time by 52-59%, reduces electrical energy consumption by 70-84%, and reduces the rate of drying electric energy of the drying process (electric energy consumed by the mass of dried seeds) between 72 and 85%. Finally, germination tests of corn seeds dried in the microwave oven showed that the temperature of 35 ° C is the most suitable for the drying which obtained a higher germination rate (90% on average). The results obtained in the project have generated a new scientific and technical knowledge on the drying process of corn seeds that can contribute to the development of a new drying technology, contributing to the development of the agricultural production of the Cotopaxi province. |
