Summary:The research was conducted in the páramo of the Salamalag Chico community located in the Guangaje parish of the Pujilí canton belonging to the province of Cotopaxi, with the objective of conducting a multitemporal analysis to determine the changes in vegetation cover of the páramo using satellite images during the period 2014-2022. We worked with the Corine Land Cover methodology which is used for the classification of vegetation cover and land use, 4 vegetation covers were established as: shrub and herbaceous land, forest land, agricultural land and land without vegetation cover according to the concordance that is handled metadata proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, in addition the confusion matrix was implemented to see the concordance with the data recorded in the field, obtaining a rate of 92% which is highly reliable and the transition matrix was implemented for 2 periods such as: 2014-2018 and 2018-2022, to know the changes of the variables in real terms in terms of gain of vegetation cover. Among the most outstanding results for the categories established as shrub and herbaceous land indicated decrease: 2014 (1280.7 ha; 50%), 2018 (1087.8 ha; 43%) but presented gains in the year 2022 (1212 ha; 48%) and forest land presents a decrease: 2014 (184.8 ha; 7%), 2018 (107.9 ha; 4%) and 2022 (52.2 ha; 2%). The transition matrix shows 12 areas that underwent vegetation cover changes or modifications and 4 areas that remained constant or unchanged in the 2 periods. Concluding that the decrease of the paramo hectares is linked to economic activities, due to the advance of the agricultural frontier cultivating in areas of higher altitude until reaching an excessive use of the soil causing erosion and having less opportunity for development, on the other hand, the forest land corresponding to pines (Pinus sylvestris) are non-endemic species that harm in the growth of the vegetation around them so in 2018 they cut down and burned large extensions of trees deteriorating the paramos.
