Omschrijving
Samenvatting:The present research report aimed to conduct a dynamic analysis of the Waste Management System of Pujilí Canton using the Vensim tool. To this end, an analysis of variables involved in the management process of the Canton's common waste was carried out, determining one of the main variables as source separation, which is dependent on population growth. Activities such as recycling, organic waste utilization, landfill capacity, and final disposal were analyzed, establishing the methodology for assessing the performance of the current solid waste management system through simulation with the aforementioned Vensim software. The current system's performance was compared against four hypothetical cases outlined in the municipal GAD improvement plan. Both qualitative and quantitative modalities were employed, with quantitative data providing an overview, while qualitative data allowed for the analysis of studied cases such as a 20% increase in source separation and a 30% waste revalorization. The final approach combined cases one and two, considering a 50% waste utilization rate. The projection of population growth up to 2023, using geometric formula, indicated a 20% increase in solid waste production in the Canton. In the first scenario, by 2040, there would be available capacity to store 9,245,700 tons of waste, while in the third scenario, this capacity would increase to 13,123,000 tons. Regarding the waste utilization indicator, the third scenario would achieve a constant utilization rate of 42%, compared to 37% in the first scenario and 19% in the second scenario, representing a 3-percentage-point increase over the current scenario. The results obtained allowed for the establishment of an improvement plan in the comprehensive management of Pujilí Canton, ranging from political decisions allocating budgets to landfill volume improvement, adhering to the phases deemed important according to the regulations of the Organic Environmental Code (ReCOA), namely revalorization and source separation.
