Summary:The present investigation was carried out in the La Argentina neighborhood of the San Miguel parish of the Salcedo canton, the objective that was raised is to "Characterize and analyze the sustainability of the producers of Tuna (Opuntia ficus-indica). The methodology proposed by Santiago Sarandón and adapted for the cultivation of tuna by Aguaiza, 2021, was applied. This methodology contemplates variables and indicators that are evaluated to determine the sustainability of a crop, likewise, it was possible to characterize the UPAs (Agricultural Production Units ). To characterize the UPAs, a survey containing 43 questions was applied, on the other hand, to determine the levels of sustainability, a questionnaire of 43 questions was applied, said instrument evaluates different indicators such as: Economic, Environmental and Socio-cultural, the instruments are applied to all ten tuna producers in the area, the results obtained were weighted according to their importance, for the Economic indicator (IK) the value was 1.80, while for the Environmental indicator ( IE) was 1.47 and finally, for the Socio-Cultural indicator (ISC) the value was 1.7, applying the formula described in the methodology to calculate the total sustainability index, the result was 1.68, Being unsustainable because this value is at a very critical level of the analysis of the dimensions, it was possible to determine 11 critical points that need to be taken into account to create strategies in the short, medium and long term. bond that allows better the sustainability index.
