Para ello se recopiló información documental de cómo se realiza el manejo, disposición y gestión de medicamentos caducados o dañados en los hogares y farmacias entre 2017 y 2021 en el Ecuador, se llevó a cabo una caracterización de los desechos generados en el cantón, teniendo en cuenta la disposición y gestión de medicamentos caducados o dañados en las diferentes farmacias, y sobre esta base se identificaron las mejores prácticas ambientales para el correcto manejo de estos residuos, con la finalidad de promover actividades o programas de Gestión Ambiental que permitan solucionar el problema identificado. Se pudo constatar que la población del cantón, de manera general, desecha los medicamentos caducados directamente en la basura común, y a consecuencia de esto ocurre la contaminación del agua, suelo y aire, por lo que no existe una correcta clasificación diferenciada de estos residuos, lo que puede tener una influencia nociva sobre el ambiente.
