Sammanfattning:Salmonellosis in guinea pigs is caused by several serovars of Salmonella spp., which are gram-negative, non-sporulating bacilli belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Symptoms include diarrhea, weight loss, apathy, and, in severe cases, death. The main source of infection is contaminated food. The objective of this research project was to molecularly identify Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis in colonies belonging to Salmonella sp. in guinea pigs in the province of Cotopaxi. A refreshment of 24 isolates was developed that was obtained from rectal swabs and lesions in organs compatible with salmonellosis that were biochemically identified as Salmonella spp. Conventional PCR and its interpretation by electrophoresis were performed on these samples, in which the 559bp bands belonging to fliC (Salmonella Typhimurium) and without manifestation of bands in sefA (Salmonella Enteritidis), Salmonella Typhimurium strain ATCC 14028 was used as a positive control and E. coli as a negative control. The results showed that 83.33% (20/24) of the samples were identified as Salmonella Typhimurium and 16.67% (4/24) of the samples did not belong to Salmonella Typhimurium or Salmonella Enteritidis, which indicates . which could be other serovars of Salmonella spp. not identified in this study. It is reported for the first time in Cotopaxi that the serovar Salmonella Typhimurium is one of the causes of salmonellosis and one of the etiological agents of lymphadenitis.
