Summary:The objective of this project was to design a machine that classifies tomatoes by size into three classes: small from 59 mm to less, medium from 60 mm to 78 mm and large from 79 mm to 97 mm, to achieve an improvement in this stage of post-harvest in a greenhouse located in the Yanayacu parish in the Salcedo canton, province of Cotopaxi. The daily and weekly crop production of this sector was taken into account. The project presents a machine consisting of shafts coupled to a chain that take the form of grids which have a certain separation which is where the tomato falls from each section. For the transmission system there is a train of pulleys that reduces the initial speed of the engine resulting in 63.5 RPM which was considered as the optimum speed of movement of the sorting sections, these pulleys are intertwined by toothed belts which prevent them from slipping when the machine is operating. In the first stage 48 tomatoes will be sorted in 108.8 seconds, in the second stage 35 in 200.9 seconds and in the third stage 28 in a time of 236.88 seconds. To determine that the structure, the catalytic converters and the drive shafts are correctly designed, a finite element analysis was carried out in CAD/CAE software and finally the electrical control system that will drive the machine was installed.
