| Yhteenveto: | Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease that causes serious economic and public health problems worldwide. Although vaccines are available, access to them is limited. In Ecuador, this disease is monitored through institutions such as Agrocalidad and the Ministry of Public Health. This study aimed to characterize the genetic variants of the rabies virus in the provinces of Zamora Chinchipe, Loja and El Oro, using molecular techniques. The development of the study was carried out from 136 rabies-positive samples, from which the virus was isolated by cell culture in 46 of them and 26 samples were selected to apply the RT-PCR technique and Sanger sequencing in MACROGEN, Korea. The characterization of genetic variants of the rabies virus in Zone 7 recorded a total of 26 positive samples. Molecular analysis revealed a similarity of more than 98. 27% with Lyssavirus rabies gene sequences, confirming the presence of the bovine paralytic rabies virus variant in the region. In addition, close phylogenetic relationships were identified among the provinces, supporting the existence of a common strain in circulation. The study in the provinces of Zamora Chinchipe, Loja and El Oro reveals a high degree of positivity of the bovine paralytic rabies virus between 2015 and 2020, supported by molecular techniques. Genetic homogeneity and phylogenetic relationships highlight the need for effective control and prevention measures in the region. |
