| Sumario: | Field research was conducted in the area of the El Empalme canton in order to demonstrate the problems that cocoa producers have for this was required in order to determine the cocoa production systems and socioeconomics in small Canton producers. Which was applied a survey 18 producers to know their opinion on the characteristics of production systems and socioeconomic status. The results reveal that the technological intensity of the management of cocoa orchards shows wide variation between farms and is mainly associated with the cultivated variety and the production of organic cocoa. Cacaotales with greater technological intensity have higher density ranging from 500 to 1000 plants per hectare, registering 78% of respondents also benefit from irrigation whose producers of the 18 respondents carry out this agricultural work only 14 being the most used as a spray with the 28%, drip 6% and backpack pump 44% in addition to the fertilization practice being 72% of the surveys carried out perform this practice in their cocoa gardens, plant growth is controlled by pruning at least once a year year being the most used by producers with 44%, and require hired labor for certain tasks. The indicated practices are absent in the orchards with less technological or traditional intensity. Weed control is a common practice in all systems regardless of the technological intensity of the gardens. Although a few farms benefit from average productivity, cocoa productivity is generally low, with an average of 1 to 9 qq harvested with 39% of all surveys conducted, annually in their gardens. This scenario is generous in opportunities to modernize good agricultural practices that lead to an increase in the average cocoa yield in the area.
