Beskrivelse
Summary:The study consisted of evaluating the handling of empty agrochemical containers and their impact on the environmental quality of rural sectors of the Buena Fe canton. To do this, the following was done: elaboration of a situational diagnosis on the current handling of containers; characterization of the packages generated; assessment of the environmental impact produced by agrochemical containers; design of a comprehensive management plan. The population under study was made up of 379 farmers belonging to 8 peasant associations. The methodology involved conducting visits to the agricultural farms of the 14 selected sites in order to collect qualitative and quantitative information. A survey questionnaire was applied with the Likert scale made up of 10 items referring to the five axes of integral waste management, through which the perceptual level of the farmers was evaluated. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis, using the Microsoft Excel 2013 spreadsheet and the Minitab 15 statistical software respectively. To assess the environmental impact, the Leopold impact assessment matrix was used, in which the intensity and magnitude of the impact was measured based on the relationships between the environmental factor and the activity. The results indicate that plastic (72.0%) and laminated (11.58%) wastes are the ones with the highest generation, with a peak of 28.2% within banana farms; the 500 g bags were the most representative in number (20.74%), followed by the 250 g sachets (16.95%) and the 250 ml bottles (15.47%). 84.63% of the containers belong to the category of herbicides, insecticides and bactericides, the first being the one with the highest presence (26.63%). The management plan consists of five essential axes of integral waste management, such as: collection, storage, transportation, and treatment and / or final disposal alternatives. For the collection and transportation, a schedule was established by sectors. Storage was divided into primary (in situ) and temporary (ex situ). While the treatment was proposed: pre-processing (crushing), the reuse of the crushed material as raw material and energy recovery. The impact of poor packaging management has a negative impact on soil quality and human health, especially due to the triple washing activity. Key words: waste characterization, hazardous waste, integrated waste management, management plan, triple washing.
