الملخص:The investigation was carried out in the city of Esmeraldas, in the localities; Las Acacias, Julio Estupiñan, March 15, located to the south of the city, as well as Margarita Cortez located in the center, where concentrations of sulfur were determined as a precursor of SO2, in the areas surrounding Esmeraldas Refinery, placing 10 samplers liabilities during November and December / 2018 (dry season); January and February / 2019 (wet season), whose general objective was to evaluate the spatial distribution of sulfur in the atmosphere, in areas surrounding the Esmeraldas State refinery from passive samplers. The spatial distribution of the monthly concentrations of sulfur (S) in kg ha-1 year-1 were made with the programs of ArcGIS 10.2 and Google Earth 2018, and the representation of the monthly winds in the study area were made through the program WRPLOT View. The sulfur concentrations obtained in the 4 sampling points in the dry season (November and December / 2018) and wet season (January and February / 2019), these concentrations being high with values of 5,060 and 5,294 kg S ha-1 year- 1 in the Barrio 15 of march (dry and rainy season) due to the speed of the winds that decrease considerably in the wet season, generating an accumulation of pollutants, since the accumulated precipitation in December was 55 mm and January 148.3 mm greater than November / 2018 which is 11.7 mm., with low sulfur values observed in January / 2019 (0.375 kg S ha-1 year-1) and February / 2019 (0.609 kg S ha-1 year-1) in the Barrio Margarita Cortez. Therefore, in the short term, a monitoring network for the city and Province of Esmeraldas should be implemented to estimate the Sulfur flows, as well as their spatial distribution.
