Summary:The objective of this research was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of plantations of Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. Ex Lam.) Urb, aged three and four years and to determine if the three-year plantations are suitable for forest use, without that the products manufactured by the forestry company Balsablock cia. Ltda, which was the sponsor of this study. Six representative trees from each plantation were identified, which should have had cylindrical and straight shafts, outstanding diameter and height and were not located on the edges of the plantations; the felling of the trees was carried out, from which six 1.25 m logs were obtained, two for each section of the shaft, from each log joists were obtained which were used to convert them into specimens for the different mechanical and physical tests. The mechanical tests were carried out in the Universidad Central del Ecuador and the physical tests were carried out in the soil and water laboratory of the Universidad Técnica Estatal de Quevedo following the specifications ASTM D143-99 (reapproved 2000) and ASTM D4442-92 (reapproved 1997). The four-year plantation had higher values in the following physical properties: moisture content in the green state, density in the green state, density in the anhydrous state, basic specific gravity, radial, tangential, longitudinal and volumetric shrinkage; on the other hand, the three-year-old plantation presented high values in the moisture content in anhydrous state and the radial tangential shrinkage relationship. The four-year plantation had higher values for the variables of the test of hardness and compression perpendicular to the fiber, whereas the three-year plantation had higher values in the variables of the test of compression perpendicular to the fiber and static bending.
