Resumo:The present investigation was developed in the Velasco Ibarra parish of the El Empalme canton, Guayas province; which had the purpose of determining the sustainability in the elaboration of products. To carry out this study, which is exploratory and in the field, an evaluation of the environmental problems associated with the generation of plastic waste was carried out through the application of community surveys. The purpose of these surveys was to know the perception and environmental behavior of the residents of the parish. For the development of this technique, one member was selected for each dwelling (30 dwellings chosen for the study), whose results were subsequently processed in the SPSS program, including a correlation between variables through an analysis of frequency and Chi square. Next, the diagnosis of the current waste management system was carried out, for which interviews were applied to the decision makers and the owner of the plastics recycler, to then proceed to the characterization and registration of the solid waste generated. Finally, the identification of products that can be made from plastic waste was carried out, selecting the types of thermoplastics that are more easily found in the parish such as: PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP and PS. As a result, it was obtained that the type that is most frequently generated is PET, followed by PP and HDPE. On the other hand, it was established that the highest CPG recorded was 0.061 kg /inhab*day and the lowest production of 0.028 kg /inhab*day. Finally, 78% of those surveyed indicated that they were willing to collaborate with the proper management of waste; regarding the type of plastic expected with greater availability and that can generate better profitability due to its low cost is PET. The type of HDPE polymer was used in the production of the product as a model for the community to observe that it is possible to manufacture various products from plastic, and also allows them to contribute to environmental care and generate economic income. In conclusion, it was shown that the population of the parish considers it essential to carry out campaigns and trainings on recycling and reuse of recyclable materials; because these activities are essential to contribute to the Environmental Education of people, encourage citizen participation in caring for the environment and sensitize the population on environmental subjects. Key words: Per capita production, recycler, eco-friendly products, environmental education, plastic recycling.
