| Sumario: | The investigation to evaluate the water quality of the La Caracas estuary in the province of El Empalme Provincia del Guayas in 2016 was carried out through statistical analysis of the physical-chemical parameters and water quality indexes; in order to propose a mitigation plan to prevent the contamination of water by filtration and runoff of polluting agents from the municipal landfill. For its progress, a diagnosis of the state of the La Caracas estuary was made. The water quality according to the DINIUS index was of good quality for the La Caracas estuary, with the exception of two samples located upstream and downstream from the municipal landfill (benchmark), where its quality for general use decreased to Regular. The results were similar to those registered with the NSF index except that only upstream of the reference point during the second sampling did its quality decrease from good to regular. It is concluded that in the comparisons of the concentrations of the physical, chemical parameters carried out in the La Caracas estuary in its different sites that obtained the samples of the water it was possible to determine that the water is of good quality. In addition, it was identified that the main problems related to the degradation of this water body is the lack of a leachate or leachate control plan; and the lack of training for personnel to handle the same. However, the current scenario is favorable, an emerging cell is already being built, together with the technical closure of the municipal landfill, and it is projected, through the hiring of an Authorized Environmental Manager for the adequate management of hazardous waste.
