Izvleček: | This study analyzed the toxicity of manganese (Mn) in cherry tomato plants and identified that excess of this essential micronutrient can cause considerable damage, mainly in the photosynthetic apparatus. The objective of this research is based on examining the effects of Mn toxicity in a floating root hydroponic system. For this purpose, four treatments were established, the control treatment (T1), and three with Mn concentrations at, 15 ppm (T2), 40 ppm (T3) and 160 ppm (T4). In each treatment, growth and physiological aspects were documented, in addition to deficiency symptoms. In T2, plants showed reduced vegetative growth, leaf wrinkling and deformation, and delayed flowering compared to the control. T3 exhibited more severe signs of toxicity, such as greener and deformed leaves, shortening of internodes and loss of reproductive capacity, evidenced by the abortion of flower buds. At T4, plants showed dark leaf spots and stem rickets from early stages and did not survive beyond the second week due to high Mn toxicity. Finally, it was concluded that Mn toxicity in cherry tomato plants grown in hydroponics depends on the concentration of the micronutrient. At moderate doses (15 ppm), mild growth and development problems arise, but at higher doses (40 and 160 ppm), the effects are more severe, leading to deformation and leaf necrosis, and even death of the plants. |
