Резюме:The main objective of this research was to analyze urban growth through the application of spectral indices derived from Landsat images in the Durán county, province of Guayas, in the period of 25 years, between 1990 and 2015. The types of coverage selected they were: vegetation, water and as main coverage urban areas. Changes in land uses in these categories were identified through the supervised classification of the two satellite images used at a spatial resolution of 30 meters. The verification was carried out through a field visit to identify the types of soil cover and its verification in the satellite images, which demonstrated an adequate spectral separation for all the selected classes. The classification of the image of 2015 was validated using the confusion matrix with an accuracy of 100% for urban areas, with concordance levels acquired by calculating the Kappa coefficient that showed 62% reliability. The multitemporal analysis allowed to detect the changes occurred between these dates, inferring that the most important and evident occurred in urban areas with a 29.7% increase, which is equivalent to 78.23 km2 of urban territory until 2015. At the end of this investigation it was possible to determine that vegetation coverage showed a decrease of 11.7%, and the areas that were not classified therefore with a percentage of 15.30%, which according to observations was inferred that they were probably bare soils and were converted in urban areas. Therefore, it is concluded that remote sensing and GIS tools are efficient to identify the dynamics of changes in land cover within a territory.
