The substrates that were used were: black earth as a control, rice husk, sand and PRODEUTEQ fertilizer, each one of them except the control was mixed with black earth in a percentage of 75% black earth and 25% the substrate. Prior to sowing the seeds, the drawers were cleaned and disinfected. The seedlings began to germinate in the second week after sowing and continued to germinate gradually. In the eighth week, the seedlings were removed from the tubes and taken to the laboratory of the experimental farm "La María" in order to obtain the data of dry and wet weight by using the stoves for 48 hours. It was possible to determine that the substrate in which there were the greatest number of plants was in the substrate Black earth and sand. Keywords: Substrate, germination, sowing, seedlings |

Keywords: Substrate, germination, sowing, seedlingsEl presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los efectos de 3 tipos de sustratos en el crecimiento inicial de Gmelina arborea (melina) en la finca experimental “La Represa”, perteneciente a la Universidad Técnica Estatal de Quevedo. Los sustratos que se utilizaron fueron: tierra negra como testigo, cascarilla de arroz, arena y abono PRODEUTEQ, cada uno de ellos excepto el testigo fue mezclado con tierra negra en un porcentaje de 75% tierra negra y 25% el sustrato. Previo a la siembra de las semillas se procedió a limpiar y desinfectar las gavetas. Las plántulas empezaron a germinar a la segunda semana luego de la siembra y continuaron germinando gradualmente. En la octava semana se sacó las plántulas de los tubetes y se las llevó al laboratorio de la finca experimental “La María” para poder obtener los datos de peso seco y húmedo mediante la utilización de las estufas por 48 horas. Se pudo determinar que el sustrato en el que hubo mayor número de plantas fue en el sustrato Tierra negra y arena.
