Sumari:Stevia is a great alternative for the growing sweetener market, because it is a natural sweetener product which also does not have calories. The objective of the following project is to cultivate stevia to produce dried leaves in order to supply part of the national demand. For this purpose the potential local market was established through a survey. The results of the market research proved that, even though stevia is a relatively new product, it is highly accepted by the sweetener consumer and it also has a high likely hood for demand (77.3% of the surveyed group is willing to buy stevia as dried leaves and 95.5% as powder). In order to obtain the maximum yield, adequate culture methods were identified. According to the climate and soil conditions a cultivated field of three hectares with approximately 100,000 plants of Morita II per hectare, planted at a distance of 20cm between plants and 20cm between rows, in beds of 1m wide by 100m in length, leaving 1m between beds, was considered to be a viable option in Santa Rosa in El Oro province. Furthermore, the necessary cultivation labors such as; pruning eight days after planting, weeding, usage of 200g/ha of iprodione for phytosanitary control, and fertilizations with 46 kg of nitrogen, 80kg of potassium and 37kg of phosphorus per hectare per cycle, to obtain a greater vegetative growth, were determined. On the other hand, the financial yield of the project was evaluated. The study showed that producing stevia is profitable due to the financial rates obtained with an IRR of 44%, a positive NPV of $38.325.5, and a benefit cost ratio of 2.02.
