The objectives of the in-vestigation were: 1. To determine the prevalence of Babesia canis in dogs in the city of Machala. 2. To determine the prevalence according to the breed, age and sex. The number of gathered samples was of 200 taken of dogs that presented symptoms of the disease. To take the blood samples the hair was cut disinfected the area with alcohol or iodine, a tourniquet was made to obtain a better visibility of the radial vein and the blood was extracted using 3 cm syringes in which previously were placed two drops of anticoagulant (EDTA). Then, to carry out the smear it was allowed to dry spontaneously to the air, it was fixed with methyl alcohol for 20 minutes, the alcohol was discarded and allowed to dry off to the atmosphere, then, and the coloring was placed. The coloring was set to act for 20 minutes, later it dried off and washed and then it was observed to the microscope with immersion lens. The hemoparasite was identified to the microscope in the cytoplasm of the red globule, which presented a pear shape. In the investigation it was determined, The presence of Babesia canis in dogs in the city of Machala which result was of 42,5 %. The prevalence of Babesia canis was bigger in male dogs represented by 23,5 % and for the females it was of 19,5 %. The Babesia canis is present in all ages. The Babesia canis is present in all breeds.

The Babesia canis is present in all breeds.El trabajo de investigación se realizó con la colaboración de las Clínicas y Consultorios Vete-rinarios en la ciudad de Machala, provincia de El Oro, desde el mes de febrero a junio del 2009. Los objetivos trazados en la investigación fueron: 1. Determinar la prevalencia de Ba-besia canis en perros en la ciudad de Machala. 2. Determinar la prevalencia según la raza, edad y sexo. El número de muestras recolectadas fue de 200 tomadas de perros que presentaron síntomas de la enfermedad. Para la toma de muestras se procedió a cortar el pelo, desinfectar con alcohol o yodo, se hizo un torniquete para obtener mayor visibilidad de la vena radial y se extrajo la sangre utilizando jeringuillas de 3 cm en las que previamente se colocó dos gotas de anticoagulante (EDTA). Luego se procedió a realizar el frotis secándolo espontáneamente al aire, fijándolo con alcohol metílico por 20 minutos, se eliminó el alcohol y dejamos secar al ambiente, luego se colocó el colorante. El colorante lo dejamos actuar por 20 minutos, después se secó y se lavó y luego se observó al microscopio con lente de inmersión. El hemoparásito se lo identificó al microscopio en el citoplasma del glóbulo rojo, el mismo que presentó la forma de una pera. En la investigación se determinó, La presencia de Babesia canis en perros en la ciudad de Machala y que fue de un 42,5 %. La prevalencia de Babesia canis fue mayor en perros machos representada por 23,5 % y para las hembras fue de 19,5 %. La Babesia canis se presenta sin importar la edad.
