Summary:Canine heartworm disease is one of the most important diseases that affects dogs in the world and it is a serious threat for their health. In the adult form, the heartworm is located in the right heart and pulmonary arteries, it produces a process known as cardiopulmonary heartworm disease. The word Microfilariosis indicates the presence of microfilariae that represent the larval parasite, they can be detected at an early stage in peripheral blood. Methodology: The sample consisted 180 dogs of both sexes from Huaquillas city who were selected by convenience sampling, from each animal was extracted 1 ml of blood by intravenous puncture which was analyzed by the method of modified Knott for identifying the microfilariae. Results: The prevalence of canine microfilariosis was negative for each age group studied. The prevalence of canine microfilariosis was negative for each analyzed area of origin. No cases were found positive for stray dogs and pet dogs. Conclusions: Overall, the prevalence of canine microfilariosis in Huaquillas city, according to the results obtained in the present study is negative for each age group, area of origin and habitat.
