| Summary: | Shrimp production in Ecuador has increased; there are stocking densities as well. This has facilitated the increase of infectious diseases, like vibrioses which are pathogenic bacteria that can also be have as opportunistic ones. In order to control this disease antibiotic are used, though sometimes in improper manner, which leads to bacterial resistance. With this on mind, using natural substances instead of antibiotics is gaining adepts. Such natural substances like plant extracts are able to prevent bacterial growth, demonstrated by research done in both human and veterinary medicine. This preliminary research evaluated the effect of two medicinal plants: Lemon verbena (Aloysia triphilla) y Oregano (Origanum vulgare) on the presence of Vibrios sp on shrimp pond water. An infusion of these plants was made by placing 120 g of each plant in 120 ml of boiling water, and it was left for 1 hour until getting cool. Twenty one glass containers with a volume of 2000 ml were filled up with 1000 ml of pond water, and each plant extract at 6, 8 and 10 ml were added in triplicates. At 12, 24 y 48 h, 10 µl of each treatment was placed in a TCBS plate, and left incubated for 24 h. A two-way ANOVA was performed, which showed a significant interaction between the concentration of the plant extracts and the reaction/exposition time. The use of medicinal plants for the treatment of vibriosis could be suggested, provided a study of their interaction with aquatic organisms is performed. |
