Description
Summary:This paper explores the use of supplementary materials for teaching English in EFL classes, and it aims to determine and analyze the types of supporting materials used for teaching children in EFL classes. This study was carried out in a private school from Cuenca, with an English teacher and with male and female children, who were in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades of basic education. To conduct this research, ten observations and twenty interviews in each grade were performed. The results were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. In the qualitative analysis, features of pertinence, appropriateness and quality were considered for each type of supplementary material, and whether or not learning styles were taken into account by the teacher. In the quantitative analysis, the frequency of use of supplementary materials was calculated. All in all, the results of the analysis demonstrated the deficiency and poor usage of supplementary materials in EFL classes; for that reason, English teachers should consider these results in order to improve English teaching and learning process in schools.
