Crynodeb:Since agriculture is a fundamental pillar in the socio-economic development of Ecuador, the use of pesticides has become essential to maintain the yield and production of important crops despite the highly hazardous risks to human health because of an excessive exposure. The present work aims to provide an overview of how yeasts can be used as an alternative for the study of pesticides and in turn highlight the problem of mishandling of pesticides in the country. A bibliographic review was carried out highlighting five aspects: [1] the importance of the study of yeasts, [2] the use of pesticides, [3] the management of pesticides in Ecuador, [4] biosensors for the detection of pesticides, and [5] the use of yeasts as a model organism for the study of pesticides. In conclusion, the current management strategies in the country point to the need to implement regular control tools that are fast, inexpensive, and easy to use. Furthermore, although the use of yeasts as biosensors for the detection of agrochemicals is still under development, these microorganisms can be used for bioremediation of pesticides and as a tool for preliminary evaluation prior to the initiation of more complex studies.
