Sumari:Solid waste generated in a health facility have certain hazardous characteristics and thus constitute a risk to people linked to the management of these in each of its stages, for this reason an assessment of the impact of solid waste management in the IESS hospital of Portoviejo was involve. For this purpose, first the methodology of the "guide to diagnosis and hospital waste characterization" (foundation Natura, 1998) was initially diagnosed using tools such as debris observations, questionnaire survey, literature review and instruments for waste management assessment, this for a description of the current situation of waste management, then proceeded to identify and assess the risks of inadequate waste management in each of the stages. The results obtained in this research are summarized due to the inefficiencies created by the legal breach of the hospital rules on waste management, which derive in risk level II. To correct and control risks management plan was proposed, which seeks to improve management processes such waste and optimize staff biosafety conditions associated with the management of HSW, comply with current legislation, avoiding sanctions or disruptions in the proper functioning of the health center and its service to the community.
