Description
Summary:Smilax L. is the only genus of Smilacaceae in the Neotropics and it comprises near 100 species in this region, while species number recorded for Ecuador is 10. During the ongoing taxonomic revision of the genus in northwestern South America (Bolivia to Venezuela), including the revision of the group for the Flora of Ecuador project, collections of the herbaria US, MO, NY, and F (United States), QCNE, Q, and QAP (Ecuador), and CAUP (Colombia) were studied and Tropicos data base was consulted. Smilax silverstonei is recorded for the first time in Ecuador, based on a collection deposited in the herbarium F of Chicago; initially the species was considered endemic to Colombia. This finding expands more than doubles the known area of distribution of the taxon, and also constitutes the first record in the Amazon basin. Threat category IUCN Least Concern (LC) for Colombia is maintained, and the same category (LC) is proposed globally.
