The Impossibility of Correcting Memory: “Insensatez” by Horacio Castellanos Moya

In Horacio Castellanos Moya’s novel Insensatez, the memory of violence is filtered through the concept of the archive. The protagonist is a copyeditor who edits a piece regarding massacres in an unnamed Central American country and is overwhelmed by its poetic wealth, while seeming not to care about the text content. The book’s narrative is restructured through the archive and the figure of the intellectual. Both serve as a metaphor for the impossibility of correcting and rewriting the history and national memory of a country torn apart by violence.
