description The maize is one of the main grains in Ecuador, of greatimportance for indigenous peoples, who consider it agenerator of life. In the Amazon region, the Tusilla and Zhubayvarieties have been cultivated for many years, however, thereare no agronomic studies to determine a production modelfor the region. Based on this, the objective of this work wasto evaluate the productive development of two varieties ofcorn (Zea mays L.) with mineral and organic fertilizationunder the conditions of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The researchwas carried out in the Amazon Research, Postgraduateand Conservation Center (CIPCA), in the Arosemena Tolacanton, Napo province for the Tusilla variety and in theOrtiz Integral Farm located in the Sucúa canton, MoronaSantiago province for the Zhubay variety. In both experimentsa completely randomized block design was used with threetreatments (chemical, organic and control fertilization) andfour repetitions. Agricultural yield and yield componentswere evaluated. Variance analysis and 5% Tukey mean testwere performed to determine the statistical difference betweenthe different variables. It is shown that the two local varietiesshow a good production per plant of 97, 144 and 94 g plant-1 inthe Zhubay variety and 94, 138 and 89 g plant-1 in the Tusillavariety according to treatments, chemical, organic and controlrespectively. Likewise, the grain yield is very favorable forlocal varieties in these conditions with values of 6.0; 9.0 and5.8 Mg ha-1 in the Zhubay variety and 4.2; 5.7 and 3.7 Mgha-1 in the Tusilla variety. The Zhubay variety obtained betterperformance in all indicators. In both cases, when organicfertilizer is applied, better results are obtained in the evaluatedvariables, which indicates the possibility of using localvarieties and organic fertilization in the production of corn inthe region without dependence on external inputs.
