Abducción y sinequismo: claves peirceanas para descifrar el ingenio del doctor Gregory House (Ensayos)

In recent years, Ch. S. Peirce’s doctrine has become an unavoidable reference in the study and interpretation of communicative and discursive phenomena observed from a semiotic approach. This is due to the relevance and epistemological accuracy of its concepts, which clarify a large part of the theoretical implications that arise in problems related to knowledge, meaning and interpretation. One of the fields in which Peirce’s thinking is especially fertile is the reading and interpretation of messages and media narratives, especially those that are constructed according to traditional narrative models such as solving enigmas, discovering the truth. or the understanding of a mystery by means of conceptual resources of a semiotic type, that is, within the framework of the dynamics established by the signs among themselves in relation to their greatest potential, which is semiosis. In this article we will review two fundamental concepts in Peirce’s immense theoretical arsenal, abduction and synechism, which are applied with great efficiency to solving enigmas. I will use these concepts to describe the reasoning of the well-known Dr. Gregory House, the main character in the television series of the same name. It will be proven that his ability to solve strange medical cases is more that of a semiotic than that of a doctor, demonstrating that his thinking, free from the discipline of medical science, is effective thanks to his abductive and synechismic abilities, as occurs in the mental processes of private detectives.
